Big Brother 9 Winner Adam Backtracks On $100K Charity Donation
April 30th, 2008 Big Brother 9,Looks like you can replace “heart of gold” with “tongue of silver” for Big Brother 9 winner Adam. Since the jury Q&A when Adam told his evicteed HGs that he planned to give $100K to charity, while soon-to-be loser Ryan said he’d get something nice for Jen, the plans seem to have changed.
According to BuddyTV, Adam has now decided against making that very large donation to his charity organization. Instead he plans to talk with some financial advisers and decide how to invest his winnings, which I’ve read come out to closer to $250,000 after taxes.
I can’t say that I’m surprised. There’s no rule against lying about certain things and not others. It was what the jury wanted to hear and it at least helped his 6-1 win over Ryan.
Discuss: What do you think of Adam’s change of heart? Forgivable or terrible? Comment below…

Well, Adam’s change of heart is because he’s a slimeball…always was. I wasn’t fooled by his “generosity”. I don’t think what he was or wasn’t going to do with the money should be a factor for the jury’s decision. However, I think it had a lot to do with their final deliberations.
April 30th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
It was silly for Adam to think he could spend the entire $500 K. Did he forget about “Uncle Sam” needing his part. I do hope he is “advised” to do something charitable with some amount of the money. I think his heart will lead him there….
April 30th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
I think it is terrible. Ryan should have won.
April 30th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
Adam’s change of heart is very forgivable. The reality of receiving $500,000 doesn’t become real until the government takes half of it and you realize you don’t go home with the whole amount. Adam won the game and what he does with the money is his business. I am glad to know he has the knowledge to use financial advisors and not squander away the money.
April 30th, 2008 at 6:04 pm
YAY ADAM! Dont spend that money on charity.
If he was my friend and wasnt on tv and won something, and said im gonna donate ‘X’ number to charity, and turned around and did not, I would hold it against him, wouldnt am I to judge or care.
April 30th, 2008 at 6:23 pm
Terrible. Very disappointing that Adam will not live up to his word of donating to the children’s charity. He could invest the ~150,000 after his donation!
May 1st, 2008 at 7:27 am
Hopefully Adam will at least give something to the Children’s charity even if it isn’t $100,000, it is still better than Ryan “buying something nice for Jen”, YUCK!!!!
May 1st, 2008 at 10:04 am
It doesn’t matter if Adam would have told the jury that he is planning on using the money for toilet paper, they still would have picked him to win over Ryan. They did not pick Ryan because Ryan was not smart enough to think ahead. Maybe he needs to watch a season of Survivor to see how “not pissing off everyone going to jury, might benefit you in the end!” Duhhhhhhh!!!

okwhat the hell i thought ryan had it all figured out adam is cool but i thought ryan deserved it more
May 1st, 2008 at 11:54 am
I think CBS is to blame as they should be upfront with the house guests to let them know ahead of time they will only recieve 50% of the actual prize, 100K donations are made by millionaires not a one time winner. I don’t blame Adam. I do think it would be nice if he donated 5% or 10% to the autism charity. That is totally up to him how he spends his winnings. Everyone liked Adam more than Ryan and that is why he won, the charity donation was just icing on the cake as to why Adam received the majority votes.
May 1st, 2008 at 12:23 pm
It’s understandable in a way. He didn’t know he wouldn’t have a job to go back to. Of course it was his fault for making the “retard” comment. Perhaps he thought his bond to the kids and company was that tight that he wouldn’t be disciplined for it.
May 1st, 2008 at 3:16 pm
I wanted Ryan to win, he was just better looking, maybe Adam will watch himself on T.V. and invest in a class or two with Ms Manners. Cuz he is just this side of GROSS. I knew he was never giving the money to charity and who cares what he does with it…..He’s gross
May 1st, 2008 at 4:36 pm
In fairness he didn’t realise that he’d only be getting ~250,000(which is ridiculous taxation)- it isn’t a lot of money, having promised to give 100,000 though I do think he should perhaps give 1/5 of his winnings as was his original plan to keep face- I do think he genuinely wanted to give money to charity- he’s probably a bit hurt that he’s been fired and publically slated, “retards” isn’t a nice term to use but some people just aren’t that sharp with words and actions do speak louder than words- so lets hope his past work isn’t forgotten- and that he continues to do good and donates some money!
May 1st, 2008 at 5:00 pm
Not surprising…they always talk about the “$500,000″, but after taxes it is $250,000 or so (depending on the state of residence). The fact that Adam said he would donate a specific amount ($100,000) to charity and now MAY change his mind is his business. If he donates less than that (or even nothing), then it just goes down as another lie that he told. It is a game…say what you need to say and do what you need to do to win.

Agro towards me?
Cos I think your being a little bit harsh, for one charity isn’t stupid… it can save lives, both literally (providing food and homes and clean water) and also by improving the quality of it- and that whole help yourself stuff, sure it’s sad that in this world a lot of the time people can be mean and unfair and sometimes it may be in your best interest to just help yourself- but in the long run your not going to get anything out of it- I’m a great believer in do unto others as you’d have them do unto you, karma and basically a lot of that do good things good things happen malarky, I understand bad things can happen to good people and life doesn’t always go as you’d like, but that’s why it’s up to us to make sure the world doesn’t get even shittier.
Yes I think he should give SOME money to charity but I wouldn’t expect him to give the full 100k, I said it would be nice if he could give the equivalent % which would be 50k- a still very generous amount- however I really don’t feel it’s my place to judge one way or another- but at the very least I think he should give a couple of thou- if for nothing else but the fact that it would come back and bite him in the ass otherwise- I mean 250k isn’t going to last long(esp if your splashing out on financial advisers) but he could probably stretch the money more by having a good rep as a man of his word, or a spokesman for some charity(even if briefly) that’s what could up his income- but really that’s not important I’m just pandering to you
May 2nd, 2008 at 6:27 am
quote from cathy “I’m a great believer in do unto others as you’d have them do unto you, karma and basically a lot of that do good things good things happen malarky”
do for himself as much as he can do to improve his quality of life.
There is no such thing as karma and all that good bulshit it’s like those paranormal things that some people claim that they can do or seen but nobody can prove it and a guy offers 1 milion $ for whoever demonstrate some paranormal ability and guess what nobody was able to do it all was fake or demonstrate by science.
And another thing about some people who go to church and prey they are not really true believers 99% go in hopes god helps them get richer or for political reasons or for i hope my neighboor dies but most of them go to church thinking deep insinde that god will help them achieve in life and to help them achieve they’r goals in life and as i know you can’t prey for this things to god only for health and family health but religion is so twisted by everyone that can be used even in war for god to help some country kill the enemy so yeah karma god and good for good things to happen to you all bullshit.
Human beings (one being mysfelf) are still some animals that would kill each other for food if they have none and eventually eat eachother still we kill still we act like animals sometimes beating one another for a parking space or some other stupid thing and still we are selfish killing everything around us (animals , forests, ozone lair , ….etc. ) for what ? for our confort that keeps growing but is never enough.
So Cathy stop feeding me that crap unless you are a saint that never killed a fly.
Adam does exactly what is supposed to be doing for a human being
May 2nd, 2008 at 2:51 pm
Adam spoke out of turn when he said he would donate 100k. He must have forgotten about Uncle Sam. I think the show should come up with more prize money than 500k.
While watching Big Brother 9 on Showtime, I realized how disgusting Adam really is. All he did was pick his nose, and scratch his ass and balls. I wonder if he has Tourette’s, I never saw so many different facial expressions. Not to mention how he and Ryan talked about women and the words they used to describe them. Not very nice guys.

As a former game show contestant (I’ve won “upper five figures” in cash and prizes in my appearances), I can tell you that winning a great deal of money in one fell swoop is truly life-altering. But I also realized that preparing for such a windfall ahead of time is the right thing to do.
Before I appeared on the show where I won the most money, I contacted a financial adviser about the possibility of setting up a meeting after I taped in case I won anything. He agreed, and I told him I’d call to confirm the meeting if I won something. Without telling him what I won, I called to confirm the meeting a few hours after leaving the studio.
Shortly before receiving the money, I had a face-to-face meeting with the adviser. We went over investments, as well as short-term plans for the money (paying off a car, West Coast vacation). In regards to taxes, we went over in detail the best-case and worst-case scenarios I could face when the tax bill arrived, as well as short-term investments I could pick for the rest of the calendar year that would provide minimal tax problems. Once it became January, I moved some of those investments to higher-risk ones that, for the most part, paid off.
If you find out that you’re competing in a game or reality show where a significant amount of money is on the line, it may be wise to get in contact with a financial planner or adviser BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAPING to discuss potential tax burdens and basic money-handling advice. Perhaps even get in contact with former successful GS/reality contestants and ask for their advice when it comes to handling a windfall.

What the blog failed to mention is that the only reason adam is not giving to the charity he stated at the finally is because he was fired from the autism foundation he worked for. Why would he give them money when they fired him?
May 2nd, 2008 at 6:28 pm
What “the blog” didn’t have to mention is that Adam was no longer working with that same foundation when he entered the BB house, according to several sources. Alternative reports indicate he was still working with the foundation which backed off its claims to have fired Adam once he actually ended up winning.
Also, I don’t believe Adam said he’d give it to one specific foundation but rather implied he’d donate it towards the cause. There are many autism foundations. Surprise.
May 2nd, 2008 at 10:24 pm
The tax man cometh. I don’t fault Adam one iota. There is a general rule of thumb to many that 10% of income be given to the church. I think that’s a fair standard to go by for Adam. And that 10% should be after taxes. He earned that money having to put up with Sheila. That guy earned a spot in Heaven for having to put up with the menopausal milf.
May 2nd, 2008 at 11:13 pm
adam you don,t need financial advisor to invest 250k its not really that much money. they will take a big commission
May 2nd, 2008 at 11:15 pm
I love Big Brothers. It is Adam’s prerogative to change his mind about how much money to donate. He said what he said without thinking it through. No one should fault him for that, it was done on live tv and I am sure he was nervous about answering that question spur of the moment. The jury who voted for Adam were satisfied with his answer rather than Ryan’s. No one liked Jen in the house and to mention giving anything to her more and likely irked some of the jury members. So please, leave Adam alone. He won, he played the game. You must remember it’s a game, all the houseguest lied to get ahead but failed except for Adam. So I am sure, Adam will donate something but not the amount he said originally. Let it go!
May 3rd, 2008 at 1:49 am
I had heard while the show was on that Adam had lost his job due to a statement he had made. Would anyone really think he would give so much money to a group that fired him?! Would any of you? He could always find another group to give some money to.
May 3rd, 2008 at 8:42 am
I don’t blame Adam for his decision… afterall this is the charity that chose to fire him the instant he said something inappropriate. He was unaware of this when he made the pledge. I feel the charity in question made the same calculated mistake that Natalie did by publicly declaring where their loyalties are and more importantly are not.
May 3rd, 2008 at 2:15 pm
It is quite interesting how we are able to watch a show for pure entertainment purposes and at its conclusion become so judgemental about the outcome. Really we only see a fraction of what all goes on in the “house” and yet we still feel entitled to pass judgement. The whole idea behind the show promotes deceit…thats what its all about. Who can lie the best, manipulate the best, and calulate the strengths and weaknesses of your opponants to act when it’s best for you. I think we saw all of that this season as we do every season, the only real change is the players. I just find it comical that we would set time aside each week to watch a show based on this premiss and then get all pissy about what the winner does with the money. Who cares what he “said” he was going to do with the money. This is a real “reality” check…we have only known these people through a TV show for three months, three nights a week. LMAO so I would say we really don’t “know” these people at all. Yet we talk about them like we do… And this limited amount of exposure we have had with them hardly gives us the right to say what they should or should not do. I did not care for all of the players based on the personality shown of them on the show, but I can also say I enjoyed some of the players for the same reason. And at the end of the day they ALL might be really cool to know or they may ALL just be terrible people. I don’t really care what they are I just enjoy the show and the premiss in which it is based. It’s like a scientific experiment on many levels and the players are the true “guinees” in the house!! BTW I should say I do not believe saying the word “retard” warrants someone getting fired from a job that they otherwise performed very well, and I also do not think using the word “retard” obligates anyone to make a donation to any foundation/charity.
May 3rd, 2008 at 4:28 pm
It’s their money (Adam $500,000 and Ryan $60,000–10 grand from a POV) to do what they want. If Ryan wants to buy for Jen big deal she’s his girl just like anybody in the house could have done for their lover if they had won. Ryan never used the pitty card ala Sheila and Adam to win the game.
Adam constantly said he was going to donate money to start a after school program for Autistic children. He said this constantly during the show and 5-6 times during the jury questioning. It turned out to be good game play on his part since he won. Not suprised he’s not donating any money he showed his true colors early on with the comments he made regardding the autistic kids and kids with disabilities in general. Adam seemed like a sneaky prick during the show anyway and this proves it but it is his money to do with as he chooses.
May 3rd, 2008 at 8:07 pm
I think it’s despicable. In my opinion, Ryan played the game the best and deserved to win. Adam’s speech gave him an edge, no doubt. Plus it doesn’t hurt that Ryan is much nicer eye candy than Adam. I pity the woman who decides to be his wife, I couldn’t put up with his bug-eyes and gorilla-ishness.
May 4th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
Honestly, I think CBS should up the ante - next game should be for $1 Million. That way they acutally end up with $500k.
Adam could make a pre-tax donation of some sort - but I agree, $100K is for people that are very wealthy not ‘ontime winners’.
Personally, I would have voted for him - even though he’s slimmey, Ryan was trying to play all sides and in the end….everyone figured it out.
One thing I liked about Evel Dick - EVERYONE knew exactly what he was! …and he prevailed.
Can’t wait til 10!
May 4th, 2008 at 10:25 pm
I did’t think he really would. However, it will most likely be very awkward going back to work there after announcing on national television his generous donation and then stiffing them.
May 4th, 2008 at 11:28 pm
WELL, BOTH ADAM & RYAN ARE BOTH JACKASSES & I DID’NT WANT THEM TO WIN. LOOKING FORWARD TO BB10!!!!
May 5th, 2008 at 8:03 am
If I were Adam I’d get my scary eyes fixed. That dude’s eyes freak me out! I still think Ryan should’ve won & am shocked Adam did. I’d love to see the parents reactions of the kids he works with after he referred to them as “retards”. If I were his boss he’d have been fired for the rude comment!! I knew that early in the game he was cold hearted!!
BOO to Adam for winning & the jurors for being so stupid to vote for him. I think the jurors were just jealous of Jen & that’s why they didn’t pick Ryan too win the money.
Shame on you Adam for shooting off at the mouth on your “generous” indian giving…..
May 5th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
MY WIFE JUST SAID “WHAT A PAIR! ONE COULDNT KEEP HIS HANDS OUT OF HIS PANTS & THE OTHER COULDNT KEEP HIS UP!!!!”
May 6th, 2008 at 2:26 am
I think just for the “retard” comment he should be obligated to give the 100k to the charity. Even though ryan didn’t win at least he was honest of how he would use the money and not try to impress anyone by lying of how he would use the money.
go ryan you rock!
May 6th, 2008 at 8:26 pm
Didnt that chairity fire him anyway. As far as I am conserned he did the right thing. sorry for my spelling.
May 7th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
What a creep!!!!!!!!!
May 10th, 2008 at 1:29 am
I just want to say we have all said and done things that we regret, we learn and move on, as I am sure Adam will. Do I think he used that as a “ploy” to win? Maybe, I really dont know, this is Big Brother people, it’s a game…expect the “unexpected”, the biggest loser is the Autism Foundation and the children that could of used the funding for more research on finding a cure. The best thing Adam’s employer could of done was offer him his job back (whether or not he would of taken it??) if Adam apologized to America’s Austic children and families,, maybe then he would of proceeded with some sort of charitable donation, maybe not a $100,000, but in my opinion (it is what it is, an opinion) $100 would be better than nothing!
May 10th, 2008 at 10:29 am
Adam looks like a taller version of Verne Troyer.
May 10th, 2008 at 8:32 pm
I am not surprised . What!?! Are you kidding? Look at the type of person he was on TV !
May 10th, 2008 at 8:34 pm
I AM NOT SURPRISED, WHAT??? ARE YOU SERIOUS ? LOOK WHAT KIND OF LOWLIFE HE WAS ON THE SHOW.
May 11th, 2008 at 12:57 am
I think Adam will be punished someday….he is not even human
May 11th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
it doesn’t change my opinion of him…I still think he is a creep punk regardless of the donation which should have nothing to do with jury decision. I always thought Adam was a loser and you can tell that he is a scum bag but one day karma will catch up to him…it always does!
May 12th, 2008 at 10:32 am
Wow Lorene, thats a bit harsh. Who are you to judge? And please do share with us, why will he be punished? Cause he went on a GAME SHOW and doesn’t know what he’s doing with the money he WON?? I also think that showed clearly showed just how HUMAN he is by the way.
May 12th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
WELL LORI, SHE IS ALLOWED TO JUDGE AND SO AM I. I’M A MAN & I AM EMBARRASSED BY ADAM. HE SEEMS TO BE YOUR TYPE (UGH!) YOU CAN HAVE HIM!
May 12th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
@Dave M:
I’m sorry, and you know me from where to know who is my type? Last I checked none of us were that superior to pass judgment on anyone. Yeah, he did alot of gross stuff, but seriously, who HASN’T ever picked their nose, scratched themselves etc? These people were on camera 24/7, of course they would be caught doing things, because they are HUMAN!!
May 12th, 2008 at 6:38 pm
Oh thank goodness someone else sees the HUMAN error of his ways, lol!! EVERYBODY has done or said something they wish they could have taken back right away, and imagine if we all got “fired” for it or was “hated” by everyone for doing it. As I stated in my earlier post, this is a GAME and we watch faithfully why? so we can sit back and ridicule and judge others for the way they PLAY a GAME? Seriously? Man you guys are a tough group and I would say GROW UP and get your feelings off of your shoulders. Hello do any of you live in the REAL WORLD or just those imaginary “glass houses”? Let the guy be a guy, which may or may not include picking his nose, farting, and scratching his nuts/ass. The more this guy gets bashed for winning a half a million dollars it just begins to scream ENVY!! IT’S A GAME!!! I am amazed at how people take this so serious, it’s scary. Here’s a thought, instead of being so nasty to or about Adam, why don’t you step out of your “comfort” zone of being nasty and try a little tenderness!! Living, Loving, and Lots of Laughing is the best cure for a rotton soul. You know what they say “Misery loves company”… and I don’t feel much like visiting right now!!! P.S. Let things like the high price of gas, earthquakes in china, tornados in the US, people dying or struggling to make ends meet cause concern for you, not which player won the BB9 show!! Life is so much bigger than this show!! Enjoy…
May 12th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
OK….I.M SORRY….YOU ALL SEEM LIKE NICE PEOPLE & I’M SORRY IF I MISPOKE. ALL I’M SAYING IS I CAN ONLY JUDGE PEOPLE BY MY OWN STANDARDS AND EXPERIENCES. DO I THINK I WOULD PICK MY NOSE, DO THE PACKAGE SHIFT & THEN TOUCH FOOD ON NATIONAL TV? HARDLY… & I EXPECT ANYONE BROUGHT UP PROPERLY ALSO, WOULD NOT. OF COURSE BIG BROTHER IS NOT “REAL”, BUT IT IS A MICROCOSM OF SOCIETY’S STANDARDS & STANDARDS & WHILE MY WIFE & I LOVE TO WATCH, AS JULIE SAYS….WE ALSO RESERVE THE RIGHT TO JUDGE, JUST AS WE JUDGE ANY OTHER TV SHOW. I APOLOGISE IF I’VE OFFENDED ANYONE BUT I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO JUDGING BB10……:) YOUR FRIEND…..DAVE
May 13th, 2008 at 11:05 pm
Adam was horrible, will be horrible…no testament to BB
May 15th, 2008 at 10:07 am
I am glad that Adam did not give the money to Charity! Most Charities spend most of the money on Administration anyway. He can do something for some family directly if he wants to. Plus, it is a game. Don’t hold him to something that he said playing a game. Yes we should not lie. We should always tell the truth, but who on BB9 did not lie in that show?
